ABOUT

CORNWALL AUTONOMOUS ZONE

CAZ is co- directed by Rebecca Weeks, Andy Whall and Ian Whitford.

CAZ
is a not for profit artist led space/project/network based in Penzance, Cornwall.

CAZ is committed to supporting the development of contemporary art practice in Cornwall by providing artists and their national/international peers access to a creative hub offering opportunities to exhibit, dialogue, collaborate, network and engage critically.

CAZ is part of a regional, national and international network of supporters, partners and initiatives. These relationships enable the programming of the project space, and the delivery of residencies, exchanges and co-projects.

CAZ ensures that it operates fairly and inclusively and that its activities support the contemporary art community and reach new audiences.

CAZ PROJECTS

''Weekender' is designed to offer a realistic option for Regional/national/international artists who have full time jobs, children, other obligations and responsibilities that normally make residencies problematic. Weekender is a non - productive residency with an emphasis on the social and a 'light touch' approach to reaching new audiences. The residencies take place in sites in and around Penzance and within the CAZ project space. >>

'Square Eyes' is a screening of international and regional video art taking place within the CAZ project space and with concurrent reciprocal screenings at partner spaces around the world. It provides a context for artists within the South West region to exhibit video work, reach new audiences and network locally and internationally. >>

'Autonomous Zone' An open project which responds to artists proposals and to artists’ needs to access space within which to experiment, to dialogue with peers so that they can develop their work in response to documentation and feedback. Each autonomous zone has a separate identity and will be based around artist’s needs and the community’s response. >>

'CAZ Talks & Seminars' The CAZ seminar programme involves regional/national/international artists/researchers/academics and is designed to bring expertise and innovative practice into Cornwall and showcase critical activity and research happening within the region to those from outside. >>

'Resource-artist led archive' A live archive of artists led activity in the region. This will include an historical archive and also material that will be made up of documentation of talks given by invited local artists and collaborators. The archive will also take in materials provided by the audience/participants that describe their projects/activities. The archive will be shaped through dialogue and participation from the local art community. Each event will feature a talk/presentation, discussion. This archive will then be available as a regional and national resource for those wishing to gain an insight into contemporary production in Cornwall. (First event planned for June 2012)
