WELD is a diverse exhibition of live art, film and installation by artists who are interested in working and developing their practice within Cornwall.
All the work shown is informed by Lionel Shriver's book, 'Post Birthday World'. The story relates to a single momentary decision made by an individual which results in a narrative spread between two parallel universes. The themes of the book fit neatly with the dates of the exhibition, a time when New Year resolutions are made in attempt to alter and improve lifestyles, much like the developments in the main character's life.
At any one time during the exhibition one or more of the artists will occupy the CAZ project space. They will be making, performing and showing a variety of work in response to the architecture of the space or the townscape of Penzance. As well as the opportunity to view a range of film, performances and installations audiences will be able to interact with some of the work, which will develop and change during the course of the weekend.
Sara Aziz and Ilker Cinarel will be presenting a live painting experiment that will explore the polar opposites of public and private activity, abstraction and figuration and masculine and feminine. They will work in shifts, painting a canvas each and responding to each other’s work. The resulting performance will act as a visual conversation between the two painters, which will be projected live, via video link to the Engine Room of the Exchange Gallery.
Ann Haycock's performance will challenge the physicality of the voice both privately and publicly. She will be responding to the landscape of the town and the architecture of the basement of The Exchange, attempting to bridge the gap between the interior and exterior. The result could be bold and surprising, with elements of the idiosyncratic, childlike and macabre.
Veronica Vickery's work 'The Cruelest Day', will see the artist installing her family's Christmas tree in the project space. Using a mix of humour and the uncanny, presence and absence, the performance will allude to and invoke worlds beyond the gallery, narratives that may or may not be true. "
The show will also feature a video piece and performance by Kirsty Smith and a selection of film, performances and words on paper by Paul Farmer.

'***Sound Barrier'
Robert Curgenven, Jason Kahn & Matt Davis
CAZ project space, Basement, The Exchange, Penzance

Khan, Curgenven and Davis are internationally active electro/acoustic musicians exploring sound and music through experimental techniques. This event featured a solo by Khan and Curgenven followed by a duo by Khan and Davis. The duo performed without any preconceived plan or structure, and was their first performance together. This event was an attempt to place the individual performers' unique processes, techniques and theoretical concerns within an open space of occurrence, creating a situation which engaged the audience in a participative act of collaboration, and so creates an open space which avoids singular and/or passive interpretations.
'Wasteland'
Uta Baldauf and Christy O'Donnell
CAZ project space, Basement, The Exchange, Penzance
Performative installation - Friday 10th December 2010 - 7pm till 9pm
Reflective installation - Saturday 11th December 2010 - 11am till 4pm
Uta and Christy presented an evening of sonic, visual and performative art works that invited the audience to interact/participate. The Wasteland project existed and was presented in two main forms: a performative installation and radio show that was also broadcasted via Penwith Community Radio, Source FM Falmouth and Soundart Radio, Dartington and the Totnes area of South Devon. It is a transient project that can respond and be influenced by site and social contexts.
The Wasteland brings together a shared love and interest for contemporary art and experimental radio and the fusion between them both. Within the wasteland radio programme the boundaries are set by the duration of the show but the philosophy of the show is to be as free, changeable and as spontaneous as possible. By a lack of structure a situation is created in a space, which can liberate beyond stereotypical expectations.
